Around 10 - 15 kilometres from Innsbruck, Axams and the Axamer Lizum score points not only for their snow-sure downhill runs and extensive hiking trails, but also for their unique location: the imposing mountain massif of the Kalkkögel presents itself particularly beautifully here. Incidentally, their rugged peaks earned them the title "Dolomites of the North". Axams is above all a place of living customs and traditions and has twice been the venue for the Winter Olympics. The world's best skiers competed in the nearby Axamer Lizum ski area in 1964 and 1976.
A popular recreational area and hiking destination
Rustic mountain huts and modern alpine guesthouses await when you are ready for a break or a bite to eat. One of the most beautiful is the Hoadlhaus in the resort of Axamer Lizum. This restaurant is a modern glass building located high up in the mountains at an altitude of 2,340 metres above sea level. The restaurant's huge windows offer stunning views in all directions. It simply doesn't get any better: Axamer Lizum overlooks the magnificent peaks of the Kalkkögel mountains and surrounding mountain ranges. Ideal for soaking up the sun and relaxing, especially during a hike or a ski day.
Tradition has become UNESCO cultural heritage: the carnival in Axams, or "Fosnacht" as it is known by the locals, is a big and spectacular event held here every year. This village west of Innsbruck is probably home to one of the most unconventional and roughest carnival customs in the area around Innsbruck. During the colourful celebrations, the characters wear precious, handcrafted costumes. The "Axamer Wampeler" and their "riders" assume the main role supported by many other traditional characters: noble Tuxer, Flitscheler, altboarische Paarln, Nadln, witches, Bujazzln, bears and bear handlers. The Wampelerreiten is a particularly special event and well-worth a visit. This custom has quite rightly been granted UNESCO intangible cultural heritage status.
The modern Hoadl 10-seater gondola lift runs close to the legendary red Olympic funicular train, taking winter sports enthusiasts comfortably up to the highest point on the Hoadl high plateau at 2340m above sea level and to Austria's largest covered sun terrace in just a few minutes. In winter, an absolutely snow-sure Dorado for skiers, snowboarders and freestylers - including numerous lifts and the newly designed Golden Roof Snowpark.
At the moment we are in the middle of a mid-summer-like heat wave with extremely hot temperatures! Such a heat wave is always accompanied by undiluted sunshine, which there will be an abundance of once again. The day will be sunny and hot. Thunderstorms will be rare.
