The route between Mittenwald and Telfs, the "Isar-Loisach-Leutascher Ache-Inn" section of the Way of St. James, is one of the absolute highlights along the Way of St. James in Tyrol. We recommend doing this section in two stages: the first from Mittenwald to Leutasch, the second from Leutasch via Telfs to Stams.

The route starts with a dramatic highlight, as the pilgrims pass through the romantic wilderness of the Leutasch Gorge in Mittenwald. The stage then continues along the shimmering emerald waters of the Leutascher Ache river to the village of Leutasch. Along the way, one mountain in particular becomes an increasingly prominent feature up ahead of the swift and peaceful pilgrims: Hohe Munde.

After Leutasch, the route leads downhill for the first time, passing through fragrant larch forests and past ancient, painted farmhouses towards Telfs. It is possible to go via the peace bell in Mösern or the so-called "Brand", a remote farmstead near Telfs. The route then continues via Birkenberg with its delicate baroque church, past the ancient St. George's Church to the centre of Telfs.

From there, the Way of St. James leads up to the "Mieming Plateau", also known as the sunny plateau. The soaring mountains of the Mieming Range combined with the impressive Hohe Munde mountain create a panoramic backdrop that is hard to beat in terms of both beauty and dramatic effect. The route continues to the pilgrimage church of Maria Locherboden, which stands on an ancient sacred Celtic site with magnificent views of the Upper Inn Valley. It then leads downhill to Mötz and crosses the River Inn, bringing the pilgrims to the village of Stams, which is home to a Cistercian Abbey and the former pilgrimage church of St John the Baptist.
