The right equipment for the mountains
Even on a simple hike, it’s important to have the right equipment, for example good footwear. We recommend that you wear hiking boots, especially at high altitudes and in rough terrain. Flip-flops, sandals and high heels should be saved for your time down in the valley! You also need to be aware of the differences in temperature between the mountains and the city. If you decide to take the Nordkettenbahnen lifts and cable cars from the city centre up to the Seegrube or Hafelekar, for example, you’ll need some extra layers! Even if the temperature is 30°C when you start out on your journey, it gets cooler the higher up you get. A jacket is therefore an absolute must! It is also a good idea to take wet weather gear and a hat to protect you from the strong mountain sun. When up in the mountains, do not underestimate the elements. Packing your suitcase for Innsbruck
The great thing about summer in Innsbruck is that it is normally lovely and warm during the day, with temperatures reaching up to over 30 degrees Celsius. In the evening, the drop in temperature is ideal for a comfortable night’s sleep. If you decide to head out for the night and make the most of the city’s al fresco dining options, however, you’ll need to take a jacket with you! The general rule in Innsbruck is to be prepared for most circumstances. The weather up in the mountains is quite changeable, so rain showers are possible. Temperatures then tend to cool down and become less pleasant. Then again, you may also get stunning summer weather during your holiday. It’s therefore well worth packing both a jumper and a swimming costume.
In winter, temperatures often remain below freezing. We therefore recommend that you bring warm hooded winter clothes, gloves and warm footwear, especially if you plan to spend time outdoors and go on a winter hike or tobogganing. The ideal way to warm up: a mug of hot mulled wine at the Christmas markets in December or a visit to one of the many friendly and welcoming mountain huts and cosy cafés.
